Abdelmalek Cherrad Urges Stadium Change For Egypt Matchup
The Bastia striker believes that facing the continental champions in Blida is a mistake.
Abdelmalek Cherrad has expressed
his discontentment with the fact that the country’s football federation picked the
Mustapha Tchaker stadium in Blida for Algeria’s crucial World Cup qualifier
versus Egypt on June 7.
The 35,000-capacity stadium was picked because all but four of the national team players opted for it. The intimate setting has reaped positive results in the past, including the Fennecs' come-from-behind victory over Senegal in the previous round that knocked the West Africans out of the running for a place in the 2010 finals.
However, Cherrad has judged Blida as too small of a stadium and believes that 66,000 supporters in the alternative setting would be more intimidating for opponents.
“With all the respect I have for Blida’s stadium and their supporters, it’s scandalous not to put the 5th of July stadium on the list of stadiums able to host these matches,” he exclaimed in an interview with Le Buteur magazine.
“At Blida we won a number of matches but it’s not like the 5th of July. In France, they’d like to have a stadium like this. At the Stade de France, there are 80,000 spectators but no noise. Bring Egypt to the 5th of July at ten o’clock and you’ll see!”
The OGC Nice product has not been called back to the national team since he left the Greens' training camp prior to their match against Cape Verde due to a dispute with football officials over win bonuses.
