Rabah Madjer Open To Becoming Algerian Minister Of Sport
The Desert Fox legend could very well become Algeria’s next Minister of Sport if President Abdelaziz Bouteflika wins a controversial third term in office.
In an interview with Al Khabar newspaper, Rabah Madjer has confirmed recent rumblings that he could become Algeria’s Minister of Sport after endorsing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s in the upcoming Presidential race.
The announcement comes a month before voting takes place across the North African country on April 9.
Asked if he would accept the appointment Madjer, he said, “I don’t like predictions. I prefer talking about things at the correct time and in the right place. If I’ve decided to vote for President Bouteflika and accepted to be director of his campaign in Qatar, it is because I’m persuaded he is the right man to become Mr. President.
“I’m a man who belongs to the people and, if the Government needs me, I’ll be always ready to serve my country.”
Despite having left Algeria to work as an analyst for Al Jazeera Sports, Madjer remains a popular figure in his homeland and his endorsement of Bouteflika’s regime will be meaningful to sport fans in the nation.
However, his support is not crucial as most political observers are predicting an easy win for the current President.
The interview also marks the first time Madjer has publicly criticised the national team under the tenure of coach Rabah Saadane, who he accuses of not instilling enough tactical discipline and fighting spirit in the side.
Madjer went on to single out Algeria’s European-based professionals for their lack of effort. “The majority of the national team’s players play abroad,” he explained. “I want to say that Saadane is required to impose more discipline within them. If the players continue performing at the same level, I don’t believe we’ll go anywhere!”
Madjer’s comments will surely make headlines in Algerian sports circles, adding to the debate amongst football fans regarding what steps must be taken in order to ensure that the Greens have the best possible chance of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
