Pirates Win Soweto Derby
South Africa's Orlando Pirates ended a four-year wait when they beat arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 in the Soweto Derby on Sunday.
First-half goals from Gilbert Mushangazhike and Lucas Thwala secured Orlando Pirates their first victory over Kaizer Chiefs in an official competition since October 2004.
Pirates controlled the game and ought to have scored more goals against a largely subdued Chiefs, who could not line up their new Nigerian signing Ibe Zito Ogbonna because his transfer papers did not come through in time for this match-up.
"We played very well and we had several chances to score more goals. I'm delighted with the overall team performance," said 'The Buccaneer's' Dutch coach Rudi Krol.
"Pirates wanted it more and deserved their victory," said Chiefs' coach Mushin Ertugral.
The victory catapulted Pirates to fifth place as they have now recorded 12 points from eight matches, same as city rivals Chiefs, who are fourth courtesy of a better goal difference.
BidVest Wits lead the PSL standings with 16 points from seven matches while Golden Arrows are second, a point adrift.
