Africa Cup Of Nations Player Profile: Fredi Kanoute – Mali
With the African Cup of Nations tournament in Angola only a few weeks away, Goal.com takes a look at some of the stars who are expected to shine brightly…
Country: Mali
Club: Sevilla
Position: Striker
Age: 32
Previous AFCON Titles: None
Frederic Kanoute was born on September 2 in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon, France. He started his football career with a local French club Olympique Lyonnais who he joined as an apprentice in 1997.
He made his first appearance in the Intertoto Cup against Polish side Odra Wodzislaw. He left Lyon to join the English Premiership side West Ham in 2000 where he made 84 appearances in three seasons before moving to another London based club, Tottenham Hotspur who bought him at the end of 2002-2003 season.
His stint at Tottenham was a mixed bag of brilliance and controversy. He scored in his debut and in 2004 he preferred to play for Mali in the Africa Cup of Nations despite pleas from the club and later in 2005, he went AWOL from Tottenham’s 2005 summer tour to Mauritius. Despite his brilliance, he was sold to Sevilla in August 2005 for €6.5m.
In the closing days of that season he helped Sevilla to win their first European Trophy in the UEFA Cup final. He remains at the club to date, winning more trophies in the last few years, but they will be disappointed to have to let him go to Angola in January for the continental showpiece.
In international football, Kanoute first joined the French under-21 side and scored only one goal in the three years he spent with the team. But after turning 21 in 1998, he was not called to the French national squad and did not play international football in the subsequent years.
This made him decide to play for his father’s country, Mali after FIFA changed the rules with regards to representing national teams at junior and senior levels. As a squad member for the Mali team in the 2004 Africa Cup of nations, he scored four goals to assist the team to reach the semis where they were eliminated by Morocco.
During the 2010 World Cup/Africa of Nations qualifiers, Ghana pinched the World Cup place in the group and Mali came second.
About their performance in the qualifiers, Kanoute was quoted in Sky Sports as saying, "We are happy, we wanted to go to the World Cup but Ghana were better than us," he said.
On the next assignment in Angola, he said, "In the African Nations Cup, we need to do better than the last time (when they did not get past the first round), hopefully with all our players getting to the championship fit and raring to go.
"The Mali nation deserves better so let's make them happy."
As Mali jet to Angola for the 2010 African Cup of Nations ready for battle with the host Angola, Algeria and Malawi in group A, without doubt, Kanoute will headline their attacking onslaught as they try to improve on their 2004 outing when they reached the semi-finals.
So far, Kanoute has won 33 caps for Mali since 2004 and scored an impressive 20 goals. At 32, the Angola tournament may be his last international tournament, yet another good reason for him to make a memorable imprint before he leaves the stage.

Here's the thoughts of Benfica coach Jorge Jesus, who felt his side deserved a point from the game.
"They were the better team on the night and that's the story of the day.
"We have to keep fighting, pick ourselves up, get the confidence back and challenge in the other competitions and in the second leg of this tie too.
"They punished us on every occasion; they scored some quality goals and they deserved to win."

“The score made it look like it was an easy game, but it certainly wasn't.
(Strange... it looked pretty easy from where I was sitting, but hey.)
“I do not think it's over yet. I remember a clash between Milan and Deportivo la Coruna when Milan was also ahead by four goals, and in the end Deportivo eliminated Milan.
“I went into the Arsenal dressing room after the match to speak to Robin van Persie. I had agreed with him to swap shirts – my sons are big fans of his and he brought two for them. They will be delighted.
Van Bommel went on to talk about a possible move to PSV in the future, but was quick to point out his terms for the move.
“I've spoken with PSV, but we don't have an agreement yet. The club has to decide what they want.
“If Louis van Gaal turns out to be the new coach, I won't go.”
"Tonight everything went in the right direction and we did a very good match. You don't start a match thinking to win 4-0, but at the end i think we deserved it coz we played very well."
