African Cup Of Nations: Ivory Coast’s Kader Keita Wants Romaric Back
The former Olympique Lyonnais master dribbler says the ejection of N’Dri Koffi Romaric from the Elephants will hamper the team at Angola 2010.
The festive season is around
again, and Ivory Coast’s capital Abidjan is bubbling more with the
conspicuous presence of most of the players called up
for the about-to-commence Nations Cup.
Among the stars currently creating sensation on the streets with Hummer Jeeps, BMW X6s and Jaguar convertibles, provoking more lust and hunger in the souls of fledgling footballers, is Turkey’s Galatasaray forward, Kader Keita.
On Christmas day, the 28-year-old was impeccably disguised as Father Christmas, joyfully dishing out fabulous gifts to children at a local function. But behind his regalia, the Ivorian footballer was sad.
Why did Coach Vahid Halilhodvic strike off FC Seville’s midfielder, N’Dri Koffi Romaric, from Ivory Coast’s 23-man squad?
“I feel so sad not having Romaric with us as we head for Angola,” Keita told Ivorian sports magazine, SportIvoire, after the children’s party.
“I was thinking he was on the list till the last minute. It’s sad, and I feel it more because the guy is my good friend. I can’t explain this,” he added.
Just as Keita can’t explain why the 26-year-old midfielder was dropped from the squad, so many Ivorians can’t understand it as well. No official reason was provided by the coach or the football federation, FIF. Only rumours keep filling ears that Romaric had been abandoned because of indiscipline.
“If it’s indiscipline, it can be sorted out easily. Everybody makes mistakes. We need to consider the importance of this player in the team. His absence will do us harm in Angola,” Keita said. So what can be done, considering the fact that it’s almost too late to amend the list?
“I think Romaric should be forgiven for whatever reason that caused his elimination, and be called back to the team. He has his place within the Elephants,” Keita proposed.
N’Dri Romaric left Le Mans UC for Sevilla in 2008 on an €8million transfer.
