Minute of silence at all Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals in memory of Egyptian victims
The African football governing body has decided to dedicate some time before the matches to reflect on the tragedy and remember those who passed away
The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has announced that a minute of silence will be observed at the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final matches this coming weekend in memory of those who were killed and the hundreds injured when rival fans clashed in Egypt on Wednesday. At least 74 people died during rioting after Al-Masry's 3-1 home victory against Al-Ahly in the Egyptian Premier League, according to the country's health ministry.
Thousands of Masry fans flooded the field just seconds after the match. While some celebrated, others attacked fans and players of the Egyptian champions. Police presence appeared to be light around the far end of the stadium where the Ahly players had gathered.
It is reported that the home fans cornered Al-Ahly's supporters on the pitch and around the stadium, throwing stones and bottles at them, leading to deaths and injuries.
"African football is in a state of mourning," said Caf president Issa Hayatou in the wake of the tragedy.
Each of the quarter-final matches in Malabo, Bata, Libreville and Franceville will have a minute of silence before the start of the games out of respect for those who were affected by the terrible incident.
