The Auxerre striker was selected by Sami Trabelsi despite coming off with an injury in Tunisia’s first preparatory match against Basque Country
Tunisian national team striker Issam Jemaa could miss all three of the Carthage Eagles’ group C matches against Morocco, Niger, and co-hosts Gabon at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). According to Koora.com, the leading scorer of qualifying will need an additional ten days of recovery before he is fully over a hamstring injury that he aggravated in a friendly against Basque Country.
The news has irked a large number of supporters and analysts from the north African country who were critical of his selection in the first place given his lack of playing time and poor performances in French Ligue 1 this season.
Coach Trabelsi’s decision to drop domestic league standouts such as Iheb Msakni and Hatten Baratli is sure to come under increasing scrutiny, especially if the Tunisians fail to advance to the second round where they may be able to recover their injured attacker. Based on recent performances, Saber Khlifa looks the most likely to replace Jemaa up front but Amine Chermiti and Sami Allagui are also in the running.
