Modibo Maiga still recovering from Malaria contracted during 2012 Afcon
The Malian striker will soon leave his hospital in Libreville to travel back to France where he will undergo more tests
Sochaux president Alexandre Lacombe has confirmed that Mali international striker Modibo Maiga contracted Malaria during the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) and is still recovering from the illness at a hospital in Libreville, Gabon.
Maiga was hospitalised last week and was thus unable to take part in his team’s semi-final loss to finalists Cote d’Ivoire or the third place match against Ghana that his team won without him.
His absence in the semi-final was especially painful for Alain Giresse who could have used his speed and trickery to destabilise the Elephants’ solid backline. Now a struggling Sochaux side will likely have to deal with his continued absence as well.
“His health status is good. The doctors had him on the phone on Sunday. For the moment, any conclusion is premature,” said Lacombe to ouestfrance.fr.
