FFA hands down five-year bans for unruly fans, promises tough action in future

The Australian game's governing body has giveb a stern response to the crowd trouble of the past week in games in Sydney involving A-League clubs
Football Federation Australia (FFA) has responded to recent crowd trouble that has marred two pre-season matches involving A-League clubs by banning two fans for five years.
One man has been banned for igniting a flare during a Sydney FC game against the Macarthur Rams at Campbelltown Stadium on August 14, with the ensuing scuffle resulting in one man being knocked unconscious and a six-year-old boy being hit with a rock.
Another man was banned after lighting a firework when A-League new boys Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney United met at Edensor Park on Wednesday.
A third man will also be banned for a period yet to be determined following an alleged assault during the clash between the Sky Blues and the Rams.
Outgoing FFA chief executive officer Ben Buckley said the bans demonstrate a zero-tolerance approach towards anti-social behaviour.
"The troublemakers who bring the game into disrepute with their reckless behaviour have no place in our game," he said in a statement.
"The incidents at Campbelltown and Edensor Park over the past week were the work of a few idiots who wanted to cause trouble."
Buckley also hopes the sanctions will go some way towards improving the atmosphere at A-League games as the start of the new season edges nearer.
"Football [Associations] at all levels will spend whatever time and effort is required to ensure matches are played in a family-friendly atmosphere where people can enjoy football," he said.
