Australians abroad: Cahill scores past Schwarzer while Dortmund's Langerak gets a rare start
Everton's Socceroos midfielder netted just his third goal of the season, while Aussie keepers Adam Federici and Mitchell Langerak had mixed afternoons
Socceroo Tim Cahill struck for just the third time this season as Everton defeated Mark Schwarzer's Fulham 4-0 in England's Premier League on Saturday. The Australian midfielder came off the bench at the break, before netting on the hour mark as the Toffees eased past the Cottagers.
Cahill linked up with Steven Pienaar for the goal, which he poked past the onrushing Schwarzer who didn't have a great day.
The veteran keeper was sent the wrong way by Nikica Jelavic's first-half penalty, and could do little about Marouane Fellaini's header which made it 2-0.
He was also drawn off his line, before being nutmegged from a tight angle for a goal by Jelavic to make it 3-0, although he did well to stop Pienaar in the dying stages of the game.
Another Aussie goalkeeper in action this weekend was Mitchell Langerak, who was given a rare start deputising for the rested Roman Weidenfeller as champions Borussia Dortmund crushed relegated Kaiserslautern 5-2 on Saturday.
Langerak, who has only made three first-team appearances this term, seemed eager to impress, making a few good saves, but arguably raced off his line too early for Kaiserslautern's opener, a Felipe Santana own goal.
The young Australian keeper was definitely at fault for FCK's second goal, when he raced out to meet a Konstantinos Fortounis but Pierre De Wit beat him to it, and he headed into the empty net, with Langerak collecting the goalscorer in the process.
In England's Championship on Saturday, Adam Federici was another Australian keeper in action, saving a penalty as champions Reading went down 2-0 to Birmingham City on the final day of the season.
Federici, who has been a key member of the Royals successful side this term, had made early saves from Andros Townsend and Curtis Davies, before denying Wade Elliott from the spot late on.
