The Australian midfielder put in an improved performance for the Toffees and opened the scoring after 24 minutes.
Cahill netted after Landon Donovan's chip forward which found Marouane Fellaini who eventually pushed the ball to the Australian to sweep home from close range. The goal was Cahill's first for Everton since December 20 2010.
The Socceroo set up Donovan soon after but he couldn't convert, while Cahill also went close with a header.
However, the Australian's day turned sour late on when he saved a goalbound loose ball on the line, only for his clearance to rebound into the back of the net off the onrushing David Goodwillie.
Meanwhile, in Germany's Bundesliga on Sunday, Mitchell Langerak made his first league appearance for the season, stepping in for the injured Roman Weidenfeller as Borussia Dortmund won 5-1 at Hamburg.
Langerak didn't have much to do throughout the contest, although he arguably should've been more aware of the danger when Jose Paolo Guerrero scored a consolation on 86 minutes.
Elsewhere in Germany, on Friday night Mathew Leckie made a cameo appearance late on as high-flying Borussia Monchengladbach stunned Bayern Munich 3-1.
Returning to England on Saturday, Scott McDonald scored as Middlesbrough went down 3-1 at Coventry City in the Championship.
The out-of-favour Socceroos striker had spurned two glorious opportunities early on, before grabbing a consolation on 66 minutes for nine-man Boro. McDonald nodded in Marvin Emnes' driven cross for the goal.
