Exclusive: Fans And Media Want To See A-League Socceroos Fail - Sydney FC's Alex Brosque
The Sky Blue winger didn't mince his words.
Sydney FC striker Alex Brosque has accused fans and media of A-League schadenfreude, claiming that people are waiting to see the country’s best domestic products fail in the international arena.
Though not part of the entirely A-League based Socceroos squad defeated at home by Kuwait in an Asian Cup Qualifier in March, Brosque wants his fellow local stars to “shut people up” with a good result in Kuwait City.
“I think the media and public are looking for the A-League players to get a chance and then see them fail, which is disappointing because there is enough quality here to beat Kuwait and the like,” Brosque told Goal.com.
“The Socceroos with European players have had some tough results [in Asia] as well. It was just one of those nights where it just didn’t happen. A good reversal this time around could go a long way to in a way shutting people up.”
They are sentiments shared by Central Coast Mariners goalkeeper Danny Vukovic, was called up by Verbeek in March and will now travel to Kuwait City with Brosque for the return clash on January 6.
“Had we done well, no-one would be asking questions but as I said before, it’s another chance for us to prove that we can play at his level,” Vukovic told Goal.com.
“International football is another level up from what we play week-in, week-out. The fact that we’re going to Kuwait is not going to be easy; it’s a hostile environment against good opposition so it’s a test for us but one that we’re confident we can overcome.”
Vukovic also says the criticism of A-League players after the Kuwait defeat was harsh.
He continued, “I think the performance against Kuwait wasn’t all that bad, we did go 1-0 down in the first half but we had numerous chances and didn’t take them. This is another chance for the boys to show that we can step up to that level. The pressure’s on us but I’m sure we’ll step up.”
