Aussies In Europe: Tim Cahill Everton's Hero, Harry Kewell Nets Seventh For Galatasaray
Goal.com's Chris Paraskevas is back as Tim Cahill did what he did best in a blue jersey.
Harry Kewell (Galatasaray, Turkey)
Scored in his side’s 1-1 home draw with Istanbul Buyuksehir BSK, breaking the deadlock by rising to head into an empty net before seeing the visitors score a last minute equalizer, keeping Galatasaray one point adrift of league leaders Kayserispor. Endured a frustrating midweek Europa League tie against Panathinaikos, substituted with 30 minutes remaining as the Turks recorded a 1-0 win.
Tim Cahill, Lucas Neill (Everton, England)
Full games for both Aussies, Neill having contributed to his side going 2-0 down against Tottenham at Goodison Park, losing Michael Dawson on a corner and allowing the centre-back to score. His international teammate bailed him out with an intelligent late equalizer, a diving header to secure a dramatic point. Cahill backed up from a tough shift away against AEK Athens in the Europa League in midweek, where he helped the Toffees through to the knockout stages with a 1-0 win.
Mark Schwarzer, (Fulham, England)
Made a couple of sharp saves, including an early one-on-one stop from Steed Malbranque, to help the Cottagers to a 1-0 win over visiting Sunderland after doing the same in the Europa League a few days earlier against CSKA Sofia, keeping alive their chances of making it out of their group.
Brett Emerton, Vince Grella (Blackburn Rovers, England)
A rare occurrence in that both players earned 90 minutes and put in decent shifts in the scoreless draw at home against Liverpool, Emerton solid down the right flank and Grella helping to stifle the likes of Steven Gerrard in midfield.
Mark Bresciano (Palermo, Italy)
Missed his side’s 2-1 home win over Cagliari through injury.
Luke Wilkshire (Dinamo Moscow, Russia)
End of Russian season.
Scott McDonald (Celtic, Scotland)
Scored the opener as his side beat Aberdeen 3-0 at Celtic Park, before being replaced in the second half, taking his season tally to eight goals. Unlucky not to net also in a lively Europa League performance against Hapoel Tel-Aviv.
Richard Garcia (Hull City, England)
Earned himself a full game in the 3-0 away defeat at the hands of Aston Villa after a couple of impressive recent performances.
Brett Holman, James Holland (AZ Alkmaar, Netherlands)
Holman played a full game in the 2-1 home loss to Vitesse, Holland not on the bench. Manager Ronald Koeman was sacked as a result of the defeat and a poor start to the season.
Nikita Rukavytsya, David Carney (FC Twente, Netherlands)
Rukavytsya again wasn’t in the squad and Carney was a 90th minute substitute during the 4-3 win away against NEC Nijmegen. Carney played a full game in midweek as his side crashed to a 1-0 Europa League defeat at home against Fenerbahce.
Dario Vidosic, Matthew Spiranovic (Nurnberg, Germany)
Neither were in the squad for the 4-0 loss away against Borussia Dortmund.
Carl Valeri (Grossetto, Italy)
His contract dispute is reportedly coming to an end with the club, as he returned to the bench at the weekend and was a 54th minute substitute in the 2-0 home win over Ancona.
Brad Jones, Rhys Williams (Middlesbrough, England)
Full games for both Aussies in the 5-1 away victory over Queens Park Rangers, the first win over Gordon Strachan’s reign.
Nick Carle (Crystal Palace, England)
Came on with six minutes remaining in the 3-0 home loss against Doncaster.
Adam Federici (Reading, England)
Played a full game as his side scored a 2-0 win on the road against Sheffield Wednesday.
Shane Lowry (Plymouth Argyle, England)
Played a full game as his side went down 1-0 at home against Sheffield United.
Ruben Zadkovich (Derby County, England)
Didn’t make the bench as Nigel Clough’s side drew at home with West Brom.
Patrick Kisnorbo, Neil Kilkenny (Leeds United, England)
Kisnorbo missed the 2-0 away win over Oldham Athletic and the 2-2 home draw with Huddersfield Town through injury, Kilkenny playing a full game and netting the opener in the win away from home but being replaced in the 63rd minute of the 2-2 draw.
Michael Theoklitos (Norwich City, England)
Wasn’t in the squad for the away win over Southend United and home victory over Oldham.
Oliver Bozanic (Cheltenham Town, England)
Yet to return to the bench.
Bruce Djite (Genclerbirligi, Turkey)
A 64th minute substitute in the 2-0 home win over Denzlispor, playing his part in the build-up to their second goal.
Mile Jedinak (Antalyaspor, Turkey)
Played a full game in the 1-1 draw away with Gaziantepspor.
James Troisi (Kayserispor, Turkey)
Came off the bench with two minutes remaining as his side scored a 3-0 home win over Bursaspor and moved to the top of the table.
Michael Petkovic (Sivasspor, Turkey)
Played a full game in the 2-2 away draw with Kasimpasa.
Scott Chipperfield (FC Basel, Switzerland)
Swiss season finished.
Ante Covic (Elfsborg, Sweden)
Swedish season finished.
Nathan Burns (Kerkyra, Greece)
Missed his side’s 2-1 defeat away to Rodos through injury.
Trent McClenahan, James Wesolowski (Hamilton, Scotland)
McClenahan played a full game and Wesolowski was replaced in the last minute of the 2-1 home win over Hearts.
