A-League Team Of The Week: Round 17

It's cream of the crop from the weekend's A-League action.

Jason Culina, Gold Coast United v Central Coast Mariners
Line-up: (3-4-3) Langerak, Muscat, Sigmund, Vargas, Howarth, Culina, Kisel, Brosque, Rooney, Barisic, Aloisi

GK – Mitch Langerak (Melbourne Victory):
On a weekend where there wasn’t much chance for the ‘keepers to shine, Langerak continued to grow as Melbourne’s first-choice shot-stopper. Extremely solid between the posts and would have inspired confidence in his defenders with his ability to pluck the ball out of the air consistently as they were stretched by the numerically advantaged Phoenix.

CB – Ben Sigmund (Wellington Phoenix):
Had a shaky end to the match but was imperious for 86 minutes, rubbing the in-form Archie Thompson out of the match and utterly dominating physically. Followed his man with aplomb and marshalled the Phoenix backline superbly.

CB – Rodrigo Vargas (Melbourne Victory):
Scored the late equalizer that kept his side three points ahead of the chasing pack but was otherwise extremely solid in defence, rarely beaten on the ground and dominant in the air.

CB – Kevin Muscat (Melbourne Victory):
Heavy Victory representation at the back this week but it is justified. Admittedly, Muscat lost Tim Brown for Wellington’s opening goal but he earns his place in the TOTW after making countless crucial interceptions sweeping up at the back for his team, his calming influence at its best. Brought the ball out well and instigated counter-attacks.

LM – Todd Howarth (Perth Glory):
Played his part in the build-up to Jamie Harnwell’s equalizer in what was another impressive performance from a man who typifies contributions from the lesser known of Perth’s players this season. Has been one of their best players thus far.

CM – Karol Kisel (Sydney FC):
Was absolutely everywhere that he needed to be. Finished the night with two nutmegs, several pinpoint crosses and a deadly accurate passing game to boot. Was substituted to a standing ovation and is beginning to turn his tireless work rate into a discernible end product.

CM – Jason Culina (Gold Coast United):
Lifted his teammates with his workrate. His influence was helped by a change in position to a more attacking midfield role. Time and time again he was involved in attacking plays. It was no surprise to see him have a serious key role in both goals and the disallowed goal. His class shone through on a golden night for United.

RM – Alex Brosque (Sydney FC):
A goal in each half, Brosque was also substituted to a standing ovation. Whilst hitting a couple shots off-target and obviously disappointed in his opening 20 minutes, the striker dominated possession down the right flank and controlled the game with Steve Corica.

ST – Andrew Barisic (Gold Coast United):
Barisic made his A-League debut in the second half when he came off the bench to lift his team off the canvas. With speed and skill he was able to curl in a cross for Smeltz's goal before being involved in the disallowed goal and scoring the winner when his presence in the box was again felt by Central Coast defence.

ST – John Aloisi (Sydney FC):
A rare start ahead of an injured Mark Bridge saw the former Socceroo make the most of it, pinching the first goal of the game and causing havoc to the Fury defence throughout the night. Could have added a couple more if not for some unlucky bounces. Easily the best he's played in months.

ST - Sean Rooney (Newcastle Jets):
After Bridges went down early with injury he provided a fantastic attacking outlet for the visitors. His positioning and touches on the left-hand side were brilliant. The best moment of the match came in the first half when a beautifully weighted cross helped to create Thompson’s goal.
