North Queensland Fury 2-1 Adelaide United: Fowler And McBreen Sink Reds
It was another difficult weekend for the embattled Reds as the Fury stepped up in Townsville.
The North Queensland Fury have lifted themselves off the bottom of the A-League ladder with a 2-1 win over Adelaide United at Dairy Farmers Stadium in Townsville this evening.
A wonderful first half striker by Daniel McBreen was followed by a long-range Robbie Fowler effort in the second, before Adelaide striker Cristiano grabbed a consolation goal for his side in injury time.
It was a deserved victory for the Fury, who produced one of their best home displays of the season to condemn the Reds and embattled boss Aurelio Vidmar - who watched from the stands following his touchline ban - to another defeat.
Adelaide’s first chance came in the 17th minute when Iain Fyfe played a give and go with Alemao down the right before sending a first time ball into Adam Hughes, the midfielder seeing his shot sail past the wrong side of the far post.
Eugene Galekovic was the busier of the two keepers in the opening half, and he produced a fine save low to his right to prevent McBreen from giving the Fury the lead in the 25th minute.
As he did the last time the teams met, McBreen was causing headaches for the Reds’ defence, his presence again going close to giving North Queensland the advantage just after the half hour.
But in the 39th minute McBreen would not be denied as Fowler provided a delightful pass into the striker at the top of the penalty area, McBreen out positioning Robert Cornthwaite and cannoning his left footed shot past an outstretched Galekovic.
The goal was a wake up call for Adelaide, who were being dominated by a Fury side displaying the commitment and vibrancy of a team determined to jump off the bottom of the table.
Failing to test Fury keeper Justin Pasfield in the opening half would have been a concern for stand in coach Phil Stubbins, who introduced hard working midfielder Fabian Barbiero at the start of the second half to try and spark United.
Adelaide did come out a different outfit after the break, Kristian Sarkies and Cassio both forcing saves from Pasfield with venomous long range efforts.
But just as United started to get into the groove, Fowler bobbed up in the 66th minute to knock home his ninth goal of the season, albeit with the help of a deflection off the boot of Cornthwaite, to make the Reds’ task even more difficult.
Needing a quick fire response, in the 74th minute Barbiero went close when he pulled the trigger, but Pasfield again managed to keep the shot out.
With 10 minutes to go, Fyfe had a great chance to set up a tense finale but he failed to make the most of an accurate Mathew Leckie cross to the back post.
Adelaide finished the game the stronger and Cristiano’s clinical finish a minute into injury time gave the visitors a glimmer of hope, but it was all too late.
