Gold Coast United's Bas Van Den Brink Handed Four Match Suspension
The blonde-haired colossus has been dealt a heavy punishment.
Gold Coast United defender Bas Van den Brink has been handed a four-match suspension for manhandling referee Chris Beath in his side’s 1-1 draw with Adelaide United, while teammate Kristian Rees has had his red card upheld.
Van den Brink was part of passionate protests that met Beath’s decision to issue a first half red card to Rees, who was adjudged by the referee to have brought down Mathew Leckie illegally as the last man.
Replays showed that the experienced defender did indeed step on the ball and not the man during the challenge, with reports suggesting that Van den Brink made contact with Beath as he protested.
As a result the Dutchman has been punished quite severely by the league’s Match Review Panel, with United management given the option to appeal against the ban.
They had initially challenged Beath’s decision to send off Rees, though the MRP have since deemed it was the correct decision by the referee, their line of thought likely that Rees did in fact appear to pull back Leckie despite making contact with the ball.
As a result the former Adelaide defender faces a one-match ban.
