A-League Team Of The Week: Round 15

Goal.com's Chris Paraskevas picks out the heroes from the weekend's A-League tales.

Line-up: (4-4-2) Vukovic, Lochhead, Sigmund, Thwaite, Coyne, Fitzsimmons, Caravella, Diego, Brosque, Mrdja, Thompson

GK - Danny Vukovic (Central Coast Mariners):
Showed why he is statistically the league’s best ‘keeper. The score-line might have been 5-1 to the Mariners but that victory over the Fury was largely due to Vukovic’s outstanding reflexes, including a superb one-on-one save from David Williams.

LB – Tony Lochhead (Wellington Phoenix):
Was part of the historic qualifying win over Bahrain last week and backed up with an assured performance against an admittedly below-par Jets. He crucially provided the cross to set-up his side’s winner, pipping the likes of Gold Coast’s Anderson to the Goal TOTW for that reason.

CB – Ben Sigmund (Wellington Phoenix):
A flawless display at the heart of the Phoenix defence, keeping quiet the dangerous Labinot Haliti. Produced some key blocks and dominated aerially, his physicality going a long way to nullifying a three-man Newcastle attack.

CB – Michael Thwaite (Gold Coast United):
Stepped up when his side went down to ten-man, like Sigmund before him making a series of crucial last-ditch blocks and rallying his troops at the back. One of the unsung heroes for United this season and might be touted for a Socceroos return in the future.

RB – Jamie Coyne (Perth Glory):
The catalyst in Perth's second-half revival, being a constant strain against the Sydney midfield, creating the breakthrough the Glory so surely needed with a deflected cross from the right flank. Deserved to net his side’s second with a brilliant solo effort late in the game but was denied by Bolton.

RM – Steve Fitzsimmons (Gold Coast United):
Worked incredibly hard for his side, like many of his teammates, after they went down to ten men. Crucially though, he grabbed the goal that might have allowed them to snatch three points from Adelaide, with a superb header to cap another hard working performance.

CM – Zenon Caravella (Gold Coast United):
Set-up the goal for his team with a brilliant piece of invention and provided the attacking impetus that his central midfield partner Jason Culina has failed to this season. Willing to pick up the ball and make those driving runs through midfield that open up space for his side.

CM – Diego (Wellington Phoenix):
A busy performance in central midfield for the Phoenix, part of a concerted team effort and whilst he was unspectacular, was tidy and did his job despite a lack of football this season.

LM – Alex Brosque (Sydney FC):
Again Brosque was one of his side’s most potent attacking threats, particularly in the first half at the heart of many of their best moves and perhaps unlucky not to have set up or scored at least one goal. Took on defenders and stretched the Glory defence before they forced their way back into the match.

ST – Nick Mrdja (Central Coast Mariners):
Two clinical finishes, one from a set-piece and one from open play, set the tone for a thumping 5-1 win in Townsville, while his off-the-ball movement was a constant nuisance for the Fury defence.

ST – Archie Thompson (Melbourne Victory):
Isolated up front for much of the match but was brilliant. Scored once with a brilliant diving header from a quickly taken free kick but could have scored at least one more. Held the ball up well for much of the match, and caused the Brisbane back four all sorts of headaches.
