A-League Team Of The Week: Round 13
Goal.com's Chris Paraskevas picks out the best of the best from the weekend's action.
Lineup: (4-4-2) Bolton, Byun, Tambouras, Griffiths, Tiatto, Brosque, Hernandez, Burns, Kisel, Bridge, Fowler
GK – Clint Bolton (Sydney FC): This is one of Bolton’s best years at the club after a rather horrid time last season. Saved a penalty from Daniel to prevent a Wellington comeback and made a couple of other notably sharp stops from open play in another commanding performance.
LB – Sung Hwan Byun (Sydney FC): Extremely tidy defensively and particularly in the first half got forward to good effect down the left flank, playing a part in the build up to the second goal. Has proved an astute purchase by Vitezslav Lavicka this season.
CB – John Tambouras (North Queensland Fury): One half of an outstanding central defensive pairing for the Fury, Tambouras has been one of their star performers this season. Lead the line again on the weekend, throwing his body into every challenge and providing a physical presence that is so important in holding together North Queensland’s back-line.
CB – Rostyn Griffiths (North Queensland Fury): Earned the praise of his captain after the match for an accomplished showing. The auxiliary centre-back fulfilled the role particularly well and helped to keep quiet one of the most dangerous strike pairings in the league.
RB – Danny Tiatto (Brisbane Roar): Not strictly a right-back at the weekend but will have to slot into this role simply because none of the league’s other right backs were particularly impressive over the weekend. Is so important to his side, wherever he plays, and gave them a real outlet against the Jets.
LM – Alex Brosque (Sydney FC): Another being played slightly out of position in Goal’s TOTW but in truth he is at his best when he ventures out wide as a striker and cuts back in-field anyway. Was irrepressible against the Phoenix, at the heart of all three of his side’s goals and unlucky not to have scored himself.
CM – Carlos Hernandez (Melbourne Victory): What can’t this man do? ‘Two’ goals against the Perth Glory to keep his side on the heels of Sydney FC at the top of the table, he continues to score and provide in equal measure and was typically at the heart of most of his side’s forward forays.
CM - Jacob Burns (Perth Glory): Solid performance against some flashy opponents. The inspirational captain commanded Glory around the park and was the middle-man in several build-ups throughout the match. Was unlucky not to get a clear scoring opportunity.
RM – Karol Kisel (Sydney FC): Doesn’t often draw the plaudits but is always hard working and slowly beginning to find his creative feet in the A-League. Again ran tirelessly for his side and moved out wide to good effect, doing much of the unspectacular but important work in midfield.
ST – Mark Bridge (Sydney FC): Two goals from the striker and quite frankly, you can’t ask for much more. The first was a very accomplished finish into the far side of the net following an encouraging one-two with Alex Brosque, the second a case of him being in the right place at the right time.
ST – Robbie Fowler (North Queensland Fury): Has been inspirational as Fury captain this season and continued to gain on top scorer Shane Smeltz with a fine double, the first a top class finish that he is producing with regularity and the second a smart penalty. Can he carry North Queensland into the finals?
