Australia Captain Lucas Neill Not Money Hungry - Agent Paddy Dominguez

The 31-year-old apparently isn't chasing after cash as he searches for a new club to continue his career...

Club-less Australia captain Lucas Neill isn’t money hungry, says his agent Paddy Dominguez.

Out-of-contract at English Premier League club West Ham United, his future at Upton Park looks relatively bleak following manager Gianfranco Zola’s claim that the defender was now “not a priority”.

Unwilling to accept a pay-cut with the Londoners despite their well-documented financial troubles, an alternative move has yet to materialise for Neill despite persistent links with the likes of Galatasaray and Sunderland.

His decision not to renew with West Ham despite being their captain has drawn criticism from within the Australian football sphere, with suggestions the 31-year-old’s career is financially motivated.

A testament to that perception is the appearance of the newly-coined nickname 'Lucash' that is now frequenting fan forums and websites, though Dominguez has defended his client.

"He's already declined some extremely lucrative contracts, so if he was financially motivated, he would have accepted one of those," Dominguez told AAP.

"One of those was absolutely phenomenal from a financial perspective."

Regardless of his motivations, the fact that Neill is still without a club despite the European domestic season now being well underway will be of concern to Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek.

The Dutchman left Neill on the bench during Australia’s recent 3-0 friendly win over the Republic of Ireland and was restrained in his response when questioned post-match about his captain’s future.
