Luke Wilkshire Warns Dynamo Moscow About Scott McDonald Ahead Of Celtic Clash
The Aussie defender will certainly keep a close eye on his international comrade on Wednesday...
Dynamo will travel to Glasgow for the first leg of the third-round clash, with the winner entering into a play-off for a spot in the lucrative group stages of the competition.
Wilkshire, who has enjoyed a successful start to his career in Russia since joining the club last year, is all too familiar with the threat posed by McDonald.
"I get on really well with Scott and I'm sure he'll fancy his chances of scoring against us,” Wilkshire told The Daily Record.
"He is a natural goalscorer and has scored against Milan and [Manchester] United when both were European champions, so that tells you about his quality.
“We will just need to make sure we are prepared for him."
Indeed, McDonald has a history of performing in Celtic’s biggest clashes during his two seasons at Parkhead, proving himself particularly adept on the continental stage.
He will likely pose the main threat to a Moscow outfit that last season finished third in the Russian Premier League.
But while the individual quality of the Australian striker might be Celtic’s greatest weapon, match sharpness and form will certainly be Dynamo’s.
Already 15 games into the Russian Premier League season (which started in March), Dynamo are only four points away from the league leaders and defending champions, Rubin Kazan.
Wilkshire played a full game as his side managed a 1-1 draw away to local rivals Lokomotiv Moscow at the weekend. Heading into the mid-week clash, he believes a highly competitive start to the season could give the visiting Russians the edge on Wednesday.
He continued, "We are almost halfway through the season now and doing well. We're only four points off the top of the table.
"There are eight teams up there fighting and we are among that group.
"You could say we have an edge against Celtic because we are well into our season but you could also say they will be fresh coming back from their break.
"There are two ways to look at everything but we are confident in our ability to win this tie."
