Gary Van Egmond Quits Newcastle Jets - Report
The Championship-winning manager is set to depart the club just days after their ACL disaster.
A report on the Four Four Two Australia website today claimed that the Championship-winning coach was to take charge of the AIS’ football program and the national U17s side.
It comes just days after his Newcastle Jets outfit were embarrassingly dumped out of the Asian Champions League in the Round of 16, thrashed 6-0 by K-League side Pohang Steelers.
The Jets struggled in their title defence last season, finishing last following the departure of a number of key-note stars and the arrival of some rather expensive but disastrous signings.
Van Egmond has since rebuilt the squad that he inherited in the second season of the A-League, during which he took the Jets to within a game of the Grand Final.
The season after, he would lead the city to its first ever national championship, absent despite the near constant existence of a Newcastle side during the days of the now extinct National Soccer League.
Van Egmond’s departure from the club should be announced on Monday, with veteran coach and former Sydney FC boss Branko Culina – now technical director at the Jets – set for at least a short term managerial role.
