The Rojiblancos supremo was reluctant to celebrate too much, even though Diego Simeone's men maintained their perfect start by defeating their city rivals
Diego Costa's solitary strike in the 11th minute - the forward's eighth goal in seven matches - saw los Rojiblancos end their 14-year wait for a Liga win over their city rivals.
"I think we played a good game and people have come out happy. I think the result was close but we won. We are hoping for a good result next Tuesday against Porto," Cerezo told Cadena Cope.
"How was [Real Madrid counterpart] Florentino Perez? Florentino was quiet. When you lose it is sad so I imagine he will have been the same.
"But was in the locker room. I've seen a lot of joy and good humour. It's three more points; you have to be happy. We are now five points ahead of Madrid? Not bad."
By contrast, Atletico coach Diego Simeone was in a much more jubilant frame of mood, comparing Sunday's win to last season's Copa del Rey final win over the same opponents.
“The result is much better than anything,” the Argentine told reporters.
“I compare it to the final because winning a cup final at the stadium of your eternal rival is important. It has been very a very good performance.
“I congratulate my players because they have responded very well in a very important game. But we will just go game by game."
