Dutch Debate: Top Ten Eredivisie Transfers Of The Season

Goal.com's Stefan Coerts runs down the top ten transfers of the first half of the 2009-2010 Eredivisie season...

10. Jacob Mulenga – Chateauroux to Utrecht

The Zambian international joined Utrecht from French Ligue 2 side Chateauroux and Mulenga didn’t waste any time to prove his worth. The attacker was unknown in Holland before the start of the season, but there won’t be too many defenders around who haven’t heard of him now. The striker has scored five goals in 16 league appearances so far and his presence in Utrecht will be missed during the African Nations Cup.

9. Stefan Babovic – Nantes to Feyenoord (loan)

Babovic convinced Feyenoord coach Mario Been of his qualities during a trial period ahead of the start of the season. The Serbian international has joined the Rotterdam side on a one-year loan deal and recently stated his desire to make the move permanent. The attacking midfielder has made only six league appearances so far, but is already a fans’ favourite at De Kuip. I’d be surprised if Feyenoord decide not to make his stay at the Stadionclub permanent.

8. Mads Junker – Vitesse to Roda (loan)

The quick forward was no longer needed at Vitesse and the Arnhem side decided to farm him out on loan to Roda. Junker has since made nine goals in 17  Eredivisie appearances, more than any Vitesse player, and Vitesse will regret their decision to offload Junker thoroughly. The Danish attacker is pretty much the sole reason why Roda sit clear of the drop zone halfway the season and Junker awaits a nice transfer in June 2010 if he keeps up his current form.

7. Orlando Engelaar – Schalke to PSV

Engelaar left the Eredivisie for a German adventure in the summer of 2008, but returned to Holland disillusioned 12 months later. The towering midfielder failed to reproduce his Euro’08 form at Schalke and the Gelsenkirchen side were more than happy to accept PSV’s offer. Engelaar has since developed into an important first team member at the Eindhoven giants and he could very well be the missing link at PSV who helps them to Eredivisie glory again.

6. Rasmus Elm – Kalmar to AZ

The young midfielder was one of the most sought after stars in Europe last summer after his impressive performances for Sweden under-21. Elm had the chance to move straight to the Premier League, but he opted to take it slow instead and joined Dutch champions AZ. The highly rated midfielder needed some time to adapt to his new surroundings, but his latest outings for the Alkmaar side have shown that he sure is a class act.

5. Dries Mertens – AGOVV to Utrecht

Mertens was one of the absolute star players in the Dutch Eerstedivisie last season and several top tier sides were after his signature. Utrecht proved to be the most interesting option for the Belgian youngster though and the 22-year-old has quickly developed into an important first team member at the Domstedelingen. Mertens has scored three goals so far and made several more. His mazy dribbles and intelligent passing have played a major role in Utrecht’s successful season so far.

4. Stanislav Manolev– Litex Lovech to PSV

Many football followers were utterly surprised when PSV announced the capture of Bulgarian full-back Stanislav Manolev. Were there no suitable Dutch players around who could strengthen the squad of the Eindhoven side? Six months later PSV are praised for their excellent scouting work to find Manolev. The defender is one of the best right-backs around in the Eredivisie. He has caught the eye with his surging runs down the right wing, while proved to be solid in his defensive duties as well.

3. Miroslav Stoch – Chelsea to Twente (loan)

The Slovakian international had already shown the world a glimpse of his talent in the Chelsea shirt last year, but this has been the season of his definite breakthrough. Stoch has been an absolute joy to watch at Eredivisie table toppers Twente. The quick winger has not only scored eight goals in 16 Eredivisie games, but he also made some crucial goals in the Europa League. With the World Cup coming up, Stoch will be eager to keep up his good form and I don’t really see Stoch playing in the Dutch league again next year. Chelsea will either hand him the chance to prove his worth or cash in on him.

2. Demy de Zeeuw – AZ to Ajax

De Zeeuw left reigning titleholders AZ for Dutch powerhouse Ajax in what can be called the biggest domestic transfer of the season. Ajax coach Martin Jol considered the Dutch international as the perfect addition to his squad and decided to splash the cash. The midfielder didn’t need any time to settle at the Godenzonen and has developed into the true leader of Ajax in the past couple of months. De Zeeuw has already scored five goals in 17 appearances and also made five assists so far. Winning the Eredivisie this term will be a difficult task for Ajax, but De Zeeuw certainly isn’t the one to blame.

1. Bryan Ruiz – Gent to Twente

AZ and Heerenveen were also after the signature of the Costa Rican international last summer, but they refused to meet Gent’s heft asking price. Twente weren’t too fazed with the Belgian side’s demands though and happily splashed the cash on Ruiz. The Tukkers will not regret their decision to go the extra mile for the tricky attacker, as he has returned Twente’s faith with a lot of goals and assists. Ruiz has already scored 13 league goals and is on his way to breaking the Eredivisie record for scoring the most consecutive games in a row. The versatile attacker is strong in the air, has a superb technique and has proved to be a clinical finisher.
