Bundesliga Team of the Week: Round 11
Clark Whitney runs the rule over the Bundesliga’s top performers in Round 11...
Goalkeeper:
Logan Bailly (M’gladbach)
Like many of this week’s stand out goalkeepers, Bailly did well to save a number of goalward efforts. Unlike his in-form colleagues, Bailly’s prowess salvaged his team a win.
Defenders:
Philipp Lahm (Bayern)
Earned his first Team of the Week honours of the season with a great all-round display against Stuttgart. Was back to his usual, solid defensive form and never set a foot wrong, even when going forward. When his team lacked creativity, Lahm pulled his best Messi impression with some clever inward cuts. A vintage performance from the versatile full-back.
Neven Subotic (Dortmund)
The Bundesliga was back to its high-scoring ways this weekend, but one man who kept his opponents’ score low was Subotic. The Serbian defender was an unwavering rock in Dortmund’s defence and did not once commit a foul.
Serdar Tasci (Stuttgart)
It isn’t easy to keep the likes of Mario Gomez, Miroslav Klose, and Luca Toni from scoring, but Tasci (with a little help from his team-mates) did that. The German international gets top honours for his exploits because he cleanly won all his challenges.
Christian Traesch (Stuttgart)
Yes, he lined up as a right-sided midfielder, but Traesch played more like a full-back. In addition to putting a thunderous effort on goal, Traesch completely neutralised Thomas Mueller - and Bayern’s main source of creativity - on his flank.
Midfielders:
Mark van Bommel (Bayern)
Bayern may not have scored or even proven much of a threat, but that’s not Van Bommel’s fault. In his part of the Bayern attack, the deep distribution, Van Bommel put in an exceptional performance. Played long-ranged passes to perfection, and provided just enough defence (even if it was occasionally sloppy) to prevent Stuttgart from breaking through.
Andreas Ivanschitz (Freiburg)
The Austrian international has been Mainz’s life force this season, and Saturday was no exception: he assisted Chadli Amri’s opener before equalizing with a fine free-kick. Faded out of the game in the second half, but his work rate was impressive throughout.
Aaron Hunt (Werder Bremen)
Werder coach Thomas Schaaf recently tipped Hunt to receive a call-up to the Germany national side, and for good reason. After Werder went down 2-0, the 23-year-old pulled one back before netting the equaliser at the death, bringing his goal tally to five in eleven matches.
Zvjezdan Misimovic (Wolfsburg)
Assisted Obafemi Martins’ opener, then scored the go-ahead goal in the second half. Misimovic may not have always been in his usual form, but he showed class when necessary, and was unfortunate to have run out of time before setting up a winner.
Strikers:
Obafemi Martins (Wolfsburg)
It’s taken him the majority of three months to adapt, but Martins has finally come good for Wolfsburg. The Nigerian striker netted an early brace for Wolfsburg before fading out of the game later on. His performance as of late has put plenty of pressure on Grafite, who may soon be relegated to a permanent role on the bench.
Kevin Kuranyi (Schalke)
Makes Team of the Week again because of another display of late heroics. Kuranyi found a loose ball when nobody else could, and scored to bring Schalke back into the game. Two minutes from time, he headed a cross to Vicente Sanchez, who equalised.
Honourable Mentions
Dante equalized for M’gladbach, but misses out due to his team’s unimpressive defensive performance. Maik Franz also may have featured if not for his own goal.
Nuri Sahin netted a penalty and was a great factor in Dortmund’s offence on Friday, so he only just misses out on top honours.
Maicosuel put in another excellent shift for Hoffenheim, setting up many attempts and scoring a goal for himself.
