Jonathan Woodgate To Miss Start Of Tottenham Hotspur's Season
An operation will keep the England defender out of the Spurs line-up for the campaign's beginning...
Tottenham Hotspur have today confirmed that centre-back Jonathan Woodgate, a man whose career has almost come to be defined by injury, will miss the beginning of the Premier League season as he begins his rehabilitation after undergoing an operation on a groin injury.
A terse statement on the club's official website confirmed Woodgate's absence for Sunday's opener against Liverpool and beyond, reading, "Jonathan Woodgate today (Tuesday) underwent minor surgery on the groin problem that has prevented his participation in our pre-season preparations.
"Jonathan will now begin a rehabilitation programme with our physios."
The defender had an operation on the same injury at the end of last season, and subsequently saw a specialist in the United States. However, things haven't significantly improved, and the injury, which kept him out of Spurs' pre-season games, will now delay his participation in the Premier League.
Worryingly, no date has been set for his return. This leaves Spurs boss Harry Redknapp facing something of a defender shortage at White Hart Lane, with Michael Dawson out until September with an Achilles tendon injury and Ledley King, while available, only able to effectively play one game a week after a series of injuries.
