Barcelona may have missed out on the chance to sign Spain's hottest goalkeeping...Sergio Asenjo will choose Atletico de Madrid over Barcelona because Victor Valdes has penned a new contract at Camp Nou. The young goalkeeper must now wait for a deal to be done with Real Valladolid.
The Spain Under-21 custodian was tempted by a move to the European champions, but he did not want to spend next season on the bench waiting for his chance to play.
Instead, Atletico are prepared to offer him the No. 1 jersey as Leo Franco and Gregory Coupet are both set to leave.
"I have already informed [Barcelona technical director] Txiki Begiristain that Sergio Asenjo has decided to stand firm on his idea of signing for Atletico Madrid - if the clubs agree," his agent, Zoran Vekic told the Spanish press.
"The player made his decision before coming to Sweden for the U-21 European Championships."
Aged 19, Asenjo is seen as one of Spain's best young goalkeepers and he has represented his country at U-17, U-19 and U-21. In addition, he has played nearly 50 games for Valladolid.
