Michael Carrick wheels away after scoring for Manchester United versus Portsmouth
Manchester United's Michael Carrick has been ruled of England's matches against Kazakhstan and Andorra, due to a foot injury, becoming the seventh player to withdraw from the initial squad selected for the two crucial qualifiers.

Carrick is highly rated by England coach Fabio Capello, who will be ruing the loss of him along with so many other players, for games which, whilst not the most challenging on paper, are still vital to the team's chances of qualifying for South Africa next summer.

Goalkeepers David James and Ben Foster have already been forced to withdraw with injury. Capello's wide options are reduced by Stewart Downing's broken foot, and Aaron Lennon's absence, whilst defensive cover is a little shallower thanks to the lack of Phil Jagielka and Jonathan Woodgate.

James Milner, the Aston Villa winger has been called up as a replacement from the Under-21 squad, which has suffered its own withdrawals today in the form of Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor and Manchester United's attacking prodigy, Danny Welbeck.
