Frank Lampard Wins Chelsea's Player Of The Year Award

It's a hat-trick of prizes for 'Super Frank'...

Barcelona here we come! Chelsea captain Frank Lampard ensures his side head into the Champions League semi-finals
Chelsea have voted Frank Lampard their Player of the Season, the third time he has picked up such an accolade.

The 30-year-old midfielder has now surpassed Chelsea legends John Hollins, Charlie Cooke, Ray Wilkins, John Terry, Dennis Wise and Gianfranco Zola, who have been given the award twice.

Lampard first claimed the title in 2004 and again in 2005 and has been rewarded for a productive season's work by the honour, bestowed upon him by the club's fans.

The former West Ham United star has featured in every one of Chelsea's league games to this point, weighing in with 12 Premier League goals and a further 12 assists.

Strikes in the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup embellish Lampard's scoring record to 20 in all competitions.

After missing out on PFA honours - he was not even nominated for the award - Lampard is happy to have again garnered backing from his own fans.

He is quoted as saying by the official Chelsea website, "It feels great because of the amount of top-quality players who have won this award.

"When I came here I never expected to win it three times at all, I just wanted to establish myself but getting this award and the recognition from your own fans is a huge thing in football. I am absolutely delighted."

Michael Essien claimed the club's Goal of the Season award for his stunning left-footed strike in the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.

The Ghanaian, who missed six months of the season through injury, has won the award before; his effort in the league game against Arsenal in 2007 won him the spoils that year.

He said, "It is always good to win something. We put effort in to win trophies and win personal trophies, so it is great.

"I meant to do it because when I saw the ball coming that was the only option that came to my mind, I tried to take it and I had a bit of luck.

"It is difficult to score those kinds of goals and you need a bit of luck."

Ashley Cole won the Players' Player of the Year award while Michael Mancienne walked away with the Young Player of the Year trinket.

Chelsea face Sunderland in their final Premier League game of the season on Sunday.
