Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola is hoping that his side can take a huge step forward towards the next round of the Champions League with a win at Shakhtar Donetsk but he is also aware of the threat posed by their opponents.
After a shaky start to the new season, Barcelona have now reeled off four wins in a row in all competitions and they will be looking for a fifth on Wednesday when they take on Ukrainian side, Shakhtar Donetsk.
Guardiola believes that the team will be in prime position to qualify for the next phase of the competition if they can bag all three points at the RSK Olimpiyskyi but he also cautioned not to get ahead of themselves.
“It’s a big test of us on Wednesday but we have a huge opportunity to take a big step towards the second round,” he said during the pre-match interviews.
“However, we also have to be prudent. I have enormous respect for Shakhtar. They are a very attacking side and very bold and it will be difficult playing at their ground.
“But I know how they play, I know their players well and how high their levels can be and we’ll be trying to cause some damage,” Guardiola assured.
Finally, the Santdepor-born coach touched on the team’s ongoing goalscoring issue.
“Scoring goals is the most difficult part but what’s the most important is that we are playing good football and we have a good team spirit.
“We just have to continue to persist and with the strikers that we have, we will manage it,” he concluded.
