Berbatov Rejected Chelsea And City
New Manchester United signing Dimitar Berbatov has revealed his reasons for signing for the club and suggested that he could have joined Manchester City or Chelsea.
Speaking to MUTV the Bulgarian revealed that he had received other offers but that he was determined to play for the Old Trafford club.
“I don't play for the money,” said the striker before adding, “If I want to play for the money, I will accept the Manchester City offer or Chelsea.”
Manchester City had an offer for the striker accepted by Tottenham yesterday however Berbatov admitted his mind had been made up and that he had not been tempted by the Sky Blues.
“Those who know me; my really close friends, know that I play for enjoyment and to entertain the fans,” explained Berbatov before continuing, “But the red shirt is a really big thing for me. I want to play for the biggest club in the world. That is why I am here.”
Last Stop Manchester?
The 27-year-old who joined Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen in 2006, also admitted that United could be his last club.
“I know I can develop here in the way I always wanted. That is the most important thing for me,” admitted Berbatov, “I am 27 now. I am at the biggest club in the world and maybe this could be the last step in my career.”
The former Tottenham man, who hit 15 Premier League goals last season, also insisted that he was hoping to help his new side to continue winning trophies.
“Now I am here and hopefully I will play my part in the team and we can win lots of trophies as well,” said Berbatov, “Trophies are an important thing in football and I want to help this team win more.”
Pressure No Problem
Manchester United have paid Tottenham £30.75million to secure the striker’s services and the huge price tag will undoubtedly bring with it great pressure yet Berbatov admitted he was ready for the challenge.
“I have handled pressure and expectation all through my life,” revealed the striker, “I am not scared of it. That is why I am here.”
Manchester United’s next fixture is a trip to Anfield to face bitter rivals Liverpool and Berbatov admitted he was looking forward to the game.
“I would love to play there,” he admitted before concluding, “We live for the big games and I think this is the biggest. I can't wait to play.”
