When Olympique Lyonnais meet Barcelona in the European Cup in the early spring, they could be playing for more than just progression in Europe’s more prestigious sporting event, they find star man Karim Benzema on the line.

Arguably the most eligible footballer in Europe not currently attached to a ‘super power’, Karim Benzema, at 21 years-old, is one of the outstanding hopes of world football. With all the attributes to be successful at the very top level of the game, les Gones’ president, Jean-Michel Aulas, has slapped a €100 million price tag on his head in an effort to ward off suitors.

But interest in ‘Benzebut’ keeps on coming (Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona seemingly being the major suitors) and, unsurprisingly, the young forward is keen to test himself at a very top club. Benzema has largely been secretive over his future plans but broke his silence in an interview with 10Sport.

“During the winter break, I thought long and hard about my future,” explained the young prodigy. “I’d like to keep that opinion to myself and speak to my family and agent about it, however, it will become clearer after the Barcelona matches.”

As if this hint was not great enough, Benzema continued: “I love this club and I want to stay but I would appreciate things more if we could get this result. We must put an end to our bad habits and reach the quarter finals of the Champions League.

“There is a good relationship between myself and Mr. Aulas and we talked about some things that could keep me here until 2010. It is clear that we must be more successful in the European Cup and set some ambitious goals.”

Given the respective form of Lyon and Barcelona, for the Rhône Valley club, who have picked up only six Ligue 1 points in six games, to even contemplate beating Barça seems unfathomable. Perhaps, for les Gones, knowing that they are playing for their team-mate's future at the club will spur them on to great things.
