Former French international defender Sébastien Squillaci launched an attack on former club Olympique Lyon today in France Football, branding them greedy and lacking in class. Now at Sevilla, the defender reputedly stated, “Jean-Michel Aulas had set my transfer fee between €3-4 million. When Sevilla arrived with €4 million, he upped his price to €6 million!”
Ol have acted quickly to rebut this swipe as Marco Faccioli, the administrative director of Lyon, spoke to France Football this afternoon. “The situation is simple,” he explained, “Jean-Pierre Bernes told us at the end of the season that Squillaci wanted to leave Lyon and we agreed that a transfer fee would be set around €5 million.
“The situation changed a little when Claude Puel became the general manager as he confirmed that he would like to keep the player despite Squillaci’s insistence that he wanted to leave. In the circumstances, we negotiated a deal with Sevilla worth €6.5 million.
“Sébastien got what he wanted by going to Sevilla in terms of a very favourable financial package, which is good for him.”
Lyon have struggled to stop the gap left by the former Monegasque defender as John Mensah, his direct replacement, has spent a great deal of time sidelined due to injury while the form of Boumsong, Cris and Bodmer has been questionable to say the least.
