"Alex Silva will be sidelined for three or four weeks," said HSV's chief medic, Dr. Oliver Dierk, on the club's official website.
Martin Jol, the Hamburg coach, added: "Naturally we are very disappointed for Alex. He had been enjoying a good run of form of late."
Silva will almost certainly be out for the hotly anticipated visit of Bayern Munich to the AOL Arena when the Bundesliga season recommences on January 30.
