Hamburg look set to continue spending the €23 million they received from Real Madrid for playmaker Rafael van der Vaart and Manchester City for Vincent Kompany by offering Portsmouth a reported €10 million for midfielder Nico Kranjcar.
With Mladen Petric signed last week, Kranjcar could be about to make it a Croatian triumvirate at the HSH Nordbank Arena with Ivica Olic completing the trio.
While Pompey boss Harry Redknapp would be loathe to lose another midfielder, an offer in the region of €10 million could tempt the South coast side to part with their player. Portsmouth have already seen Sulley Muntari and Pedro Mendes depart the club this summer.
HSV can certainly afford it, and Martin Jol expressed his desire to bring in two new players following his side’s 2-1 win over Karlsruhe at the weekend.
Press spokesman Jörn Wolf echoed Jol’s statement telling the club’s website: “As the trainer has said, the club are still looking to bring in a creative midfielder.”
