The 32-year-old midfielder enjoyed a mostly successful two-and-a-half year spell at Stuttgart but the chance to return to his former stomping ground proved too hard to refuse.
"Pavel had an attractive offer from América which he wanted to accept," explained VfB sporting director Horst Heldt on the club's official website.
"We accepted his decision and agreed to cancel his contract. We wish him all the best for the future; good health and lots of sporting success."
Early reports in Mexico suggested that América had agreed to pay $4 million (€3m), though the German media are putting the figure at a considerably more modest €1 million ($1.4m).
