Spain began their defence of their European Under-21 Championship title within a 1-0 win over a well-disciplined Russian outfit in Jerusalem.

Substitute Alvaro Morata headed home Thiago's in-swinging corner with nine minutes remaining, after wasting limited opportunities throughout the game.

Atletico Bilbao's Iker Muniain dragged the ball wide twice inside the first 10 minutes, whilst Russian goalkeeper Nikolai Zablotni stood firm to deny Cristian Tello one-on-one.

Russia almost took the lead before the break, with midfielder Pavel Yakovlev's lob, but the ball crept the wrong side of David De Gea's post.

The second half saw the introduction of Morata, making his first appearance at Under-21 level, and he could have had a hat-trick.

His first header was wasted, before he opened the scoring with his second. In the dying stages of the match, he clipped the outside of the post as the Russian defence finally caved in.

The Netherlands broke German hearts with an injury-time winner in an enthralling encounter.

Substitute Leroy Fer, who had only been on the pitch eight minutes, scored in the 90th minute after it looked like Germany had come from behind to earn a draw.

The Dutch opened the scoring after 24th minutes through Adam Maher, and extended their lead 14 minutes later courtesy of Georginio Wijnaldum's mazy run past three players before his powerful shot was palmed into the net by Bernd Leno.

Sebastian Rudy's penalty reduced the deficit shortly after half-time, before Lewis Holtby - who had won the earlier spot-kick - then equalised with nine minutes to spare.

But Fer's late winner stunned the Germans, who had a well-earned point snatched away from them in the dying embers of the game.
