Shakhtar Donetsk are a title-winning machine, says Lucescu
The Romanian coach is full of ambition ahead of the 2012-13 campaign, and feels the Ukrainian side have what it takes to make an impact in Europe
Mircea Lucescu believes that Shakhtar Donetsk have become a title-winning machine, and the successful coach has set his sights on Champions League glory. The Ukrainian champions made it to the quarter-finals of Europe's most elite club competition in 2010-11, but failed to survive the group stage last term, and Lucescu is determined to do better in the new season.
"Strangely enough, every year it gets easier and easier for us. That's because the team have been progressing all these years and have become a title-winning machine," Lucescu stated to Uefa.com.
"There's just one goal for the team, which is to win trophies, but now I'm more interested in the Champions League than the domestic league.
"Shakhtar are confident of their strength and play attractive football. We have changed the squad several times, reducing the average age of the team, and it hasn't affected our displays."
The Ukrainian giants have won three consecutive league titles.
