Former Denmark international Brian Laudrup has been diagnosed with cancer. The 41-year-old is being treated for a mild form of lymphoma.

"I am shocked by the diagnosis and I'm facing a tough fight. However, I have received optimistic news from the doctors, because the cancer discovered last week was at a very early stage," Laudrup told the press.

The former attacker wore the jerseys of Brondby, Uerdingen, Bayern Munich, Fiorentina, Milan, Rangers, Chelsea and Copenhagen before ending his career with Dutch giants Ajax in 2000. He has also been capped at senior level over 80 times.

Laudrup picked up a job as pundit at a Danish TV channel after his playing career. In a statement released on Tuesday by his current employer, TV3, Laudrup said he would continue as a football commentator for the channel's Champions League matches.
