Zaki has been in fine form for Wigan this season and is currently second in the Premier League goal tally with eight goals, behind Nicolas Anelka who has scored 10.
Real Madrid are in need of a goalscorer after losing first choice striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy to an injury and would need back-up for Gonzalo Higuain and Raul, with Javier Saviola now out of favour at the Bernabeu.
Madrid now have a shortlist of strikers they would like to bring in during the January transfer window, with Carlos Tevez and Didier Drogba unlikely to make the move to Madrid.
Therefore, Madrid coach Bernd Schuster is set to go for a proven goal scorer who would be willing to move. This list includes Inter Milan's Hernan Crespo, Real Zaragoza's Ricardo Oliveira and Genoa's Diego Milito.
However, reports suggest that Schuster is ready to make a move for Zaki, but will have to beat Manchester City to him, who are also rumoured to be interested, as well as Wigan themselves.
