Manchester United gaffer Sir Alex Ferguson has heaped praise on one of his many managerial protégés, Wigan boss Steve Bruce.
The Latics chief left Birmingham for Wigan in mid-season, steering the JJB Stadium side clear of relegation. A draw at Chelsea was a key result for Bruce, with Ferguson admitting Wigan's last-gasp 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge helped him to bag his tenth Premiership crown.
Regarding Bruce, Fergie said: "He's done a great job, fantastic. He's got Wigan playing the right way and they deserve to stay up.
"I think the point Wigan got at Chelsea helped us win the league."
The Red Devils then travelled to the JJB on the last day of the season and Sir Alex admitted Wigan's approach made for a nervy climax to the season.
"It was a tough one all right for us. For most of the game we played well, but there were some nervous moments."
Meanwhile, Bruce reiterated that he hopes to step into the Old Trafford hotseat in the future.
"Whether you're playing or managing you want to get to the top of your profession," Bruce admitted.
"You're always striving to be good and if you're going to do this job then why not set your aspirations to go to the very top.
"If I can, or if I get the opportunity then who knows?
"Eight months ago I would have been lucky to have got the Scunthorpe job!"
The Wigan boss also admitted that playing the likes of United on a regular basis will aid him in the summer transfer market.
Talking to the Wigan Evening Post, he said: "When we've got a DVD in our pocket of us taking on Man United in a full house it's certainly going to help attract players here."
