Kaboul has been the subject of heavy interest from a variety of Premier League clubs, with his name being linked with Portsmouth, Sunderland and Villa in particular.

It was supposed that the 22-year-old would follow his team-mates Teemu Tainio and Pascal Chimbonda to the Stadium of Light, but he stopped short of signing a contract with Roy Keane’s side last Friday.

An eleventh-hour bid from Martin O’Neill’s Aston Villa was thought to have turned the player’s head, and Harry Redknapp has also maintained his interest in Kaboul throughout the enduring three-club saga.

The Pompey boss revealed that he held talks with Kaboul before he signed for Spurs last summer, and conceded that he believes both Roy Keane and Martin O’Neill stand a better chance of sealing a deal.

He told the press: "I still want to bring in Kaboul but he has spoken with Sunderland. I know Aston Villa also want him.

"I went to see him last year before he joined Spurs, and drank Moroccan tea with his parents. But Roy Keane has met with him now, too.

"I'd say we are third now behind the other two teams."
