French sports paper L'Equipe is reporting that the defender, who only signed for the club in January in a €3.6 million (£2.8 million) deal from Lyon, is not keen on staying with Lens after his club were relegated from Ligue 1 on the final day of last season.

The 25-year-old, who is primarily a right-back but can also play right across the defence, is contracted until 2011, but Pompey are still reported to be watching developments as they also weigh up making a surprise offer for Lucien Aubey. Aubey is a left-back they signed on loan from Lens in January, but who has had his first team opportunities significantly limited since his arrival.

Belhadj is currently in his second spell at Lens having started his career at the club, before appearing for Sedan and FC Gueugnon before his eventual move to Lyon, where first team chances were restricted.

Any transfer move for the player would be surprising considering the fact that England international Glen Johnson is already firmly established at right-back for Portsmouth, although manager Harry Redknapp will have his eyes on a bargain given the recent relegation of Lens.

Belhadj, formerly of Lyon, has over 20 caps for Algeria and has scored three goals for his country.
