Bernd Schuster has made his interest in taking over at Sunderland known as he looks for a speedy return to football after leaving Real Madrid last week, according to The Sunday Telegraph.

The German coach has thrown his name into the hat at the Stadium of Light and could see himself become one of the favourites after his success in Spain.

Over 30 candidates have applied for the position after Roy Keane's recent sudden resignation, and the club have stated that they will not be rushing into making any decision over his replacement.

While chairman Niall Quinn was said to favour a homegrown manager, majority shareholder Ellis Short is said to be keen on a world class coach most probably from abroad.

Former Inter trainer Roberto Mancini has been strongly linked with the position, while Leo Beenhakker's name is also in the frame, so Schuster will face some strong competition.

During his 18-month stint at Madrid, the controversial German led the club to their second consecutive title before seeing his efforts to construct a squad to his liking during the summer overtaken by the push for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Schuster's bad temper and sullen attitude in press conferences also left the Madrid hierarchy unimpressed, while his resentment at their failure to purchase a new striker in the summer also saw relations strained.

An inconsistent start to the campaign, coupled with Barcelona's impressive form, piled the pressure on the German and following his statement that Los Merengues could not beat Barça at Camp Nou he was ousted.

Sunderland won their first game under caretaker coach Ricky Sbragia at the weekend, and he could also be considered should Sunderland's form dramatically improve during his caretaker stint at the helm.
