Rangers are ready to negotiate with Birmingham City over the sale of their star forward, Kris Boyd.

Alex McLeish’s Championship promotion chasers have had a £3 million offer turned down but will receive permission to speak to Boyd if they increase their offer to an acceptable value.

"Birmingham have made an enquiry, we talked about money but we haven't agreed a fee,” Gers chairman Sir David Murray told BBC Sport.

"We rejected a bid of around £3m but if they improve it, we'll allow them to speak to Kris Boyd."

On Tuesday, the English Championship outfit insisted that an offer had already been accepted for the 25-year-old.

A ‘source’ at St Andrews has reportedly added that Boyd is likely to sign for the club this week, signing a five-year contract.

"I'd be 75% certain that Kris Boyd will be a Birmingham player by the end of the week," the source commented.

It is surprising that Rangers are willing to negotiate over Boyd, no longer playing for Scotland after a dispute with manager George Burley, as he is a prolific goal-scorer who has netted 91 goals in three years at Ibrox.

The fact that Kilmarnock, his former club, have a 20% sell-on clause is one of they key reasons Rangers need to see the transfer bid increased if they are to consider selling, but whether fans will be pleased to see a key player leave is unlikely.

One of the main criticisms levelled against Boyd, despite his impressive record, is that he fails to deliver goals in the big games.

Still, his potential signing is likely to excite Birmingham fans, with the striker set to join up with fellow Scots James McFadden and Garry O’Connor if a fee can be agreed.
