Spanish media sources have reported that Aston Villa are keeping tabs on Malga defender Jesus Gamez.
The 23-year-old was linked with a move to Villa's Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotpsur last year, but instead chose to sign a new contract with Malaga that will keep him there until 2012.
The player could command a fee of £9 million, though Villa could face competition for the player's signature from La Liga sides Villarreal and Sevilla.
A move to Villa would also give Gamez the opportunity to link up with one of his fellow countrymen in Carlos Cuellar, the defender who moved to Villa this season after a string of impressive performances with Scottish side Rangers in last season's UEFA Cup.
When asked about a potential move to the Premier League, Gamez was coy, putting the rumours down to the kind of speculation that runs riot during the transfer window.
"Rumours constantly come out in the media but I don’t know anything about that," Gamez is reported as saying.
"As far as I’m concerned I’m happy at Malaga and my aim is to keep on improving my football."
