ASTON VILLA

Friedel - 7 - Dived across his goal to deny Carrick to justify O'Neill's decision to leaonve out Guzan. No chance with Owen's strike and Rooney's header.

Cuellar - 5 - Couldn't stamp down on Park's influence and clattered in to Evra. Rarely ventured beyond the half way line. Came off for Carew.

Collins - 6 - One late challenge on Owen aside, the Welshman was a dependable cog in the Villa back line. Outsmarted by Rooney for winner. Booked.

Dunne - 5 - Caught napping on the ball by Berbatov which led to Owen's goal. Struggled throughout to keep a lid on the Bulgarian.

Warnock - 6 - Put in a decent shift against Valencia for first hour of the match but couldn't deal with him as final became stretched again. Made little impression going forward.

Ashley Young - 5 - More interested in hitting the turf looking for a free kick than causing damage. Vibrancy of last season seems a distant memory.

Milner - 8 - Nerves of steel on display when he calmly dispatched penalty. Covered every blade of grass on the pitch and made a great tackle on Park to deny him second bite at end of first half.

Petrov - 5 - Overshadowed by Carrick and Fletcher. No impact made on the match.

Downing - 5 - Played on the periphery too often. Lack of desire to get involved hurt Villa's attempts to play in the dangerous Agbonlahor. Booked.

Heskey - 7 - Was a real nuisance to United. Bullied his way to a number of headers and drew some crafty free kicks. Brawn complimented Agbonlahor's pace.

Agbonlahor - 8 - Left Vidic eating dust for the penalty and pace was a constant thorn in the Serbian's side. Stretched United's defence to breaking point a number of times, but was starved of the ball as the game drew on.

Substitutes

Carew - 5 - Contributed next to nothing after introduction to the fray.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Kuszczak - 7 - Pulled out a great save from Milner. Distribution was accurate and quick.

Rafael da Silva - 6 - Improvement on defensive positioning and made usual forays forward to support Valencia. Forced off for Neville on 65 mins with an injury.

Vidic - 4 - Luckiest man in the stadium. Inexplicable decision from referee Phil Dowd to keep him on the pitch after hacking down the goal-bound Agbonlahor. Left isolated by the same player a number of times. Booked.

Jonny Evans
- 5 - Something doesn't seem right in the Ulsterman's head. Again froze on big stage and contributed to defensive chaos with Vidic.

Evra - 6 - Captain broke the line to leave Agbonlahor onside for penalty. Otherwise, was usual good blend of attacking and defensive play. Booked.

Valencia - 8 - Sparked Rooney's winner with a smart tackle on Ashley Young. Continued run up front and was in right place to hit perfect centre on to Rooney's forehead.

Fletcher - 8 - Britain's leading 'big game' player. Never shrinks in the spotlight and harassed Villa's midfield.

Carrick - 6 - Improved with time after shaky start. Charged up to support Berbatov and Rooney. Made Friedel stretch to palm away shot from edge of the box.

Park
- 8.5 - Behemouths at the back for Villa lacked guile to stop the spritely South Korean. Floated in gaps between midfield and defence. Unlucky to see shot hit the post and go out. Man of the match display ended when taken off for Gibson.

Owen - 7 - Took goal with effortless ease and struck good understanding with Berbatov. Shame afternoon came to a premature end after 40 minutes as he pulled up with injury to allow Rooney to come on.

Berbatov - 8 - Heartening performance. Up for the fight with Villa's centre backs and robbed Dunne of the ball for Owen's goal.

Substitutes

Neville - 6 - Used experience to hold the fort after Rafael's injury let him on to the pitch.

Rooney
- 8 - Followed Owen's example with yet another expertly taken header.

Gibson
- 7 - Added energy to United team after smart run after coming on.
