Only nine places in the English League system separate Tottenham Hotspur - who occupy 16th position in the Premier League - with Burnley who are fifth in the Championship.

In the first half there seemed to be a distinct lack of a gulf in class, as Burnley battled and battled and eventually their hard work paid dividends as Paterson rounded off a well-worked goal when Chris Eagles beat two Spurs defenders to send in a key assist.

In true footballing fashion though the match was indeed a game of two halves, and whatever Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said at half-time was enough to kick his side into gear as they took only sixty seconds to equalise.

Michael Dawson sparked the comeback after heading home on the 46th minute. Then, five minutes later Jamie O'Hara netted with a sound shot with his left boot.

Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko scored his seventh goal in five cup outings for the Spurs on the 65th minute, before Duff put the ball in his own net moments later.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, man-of-the-match Michael Dawson said: "The first half performance wasn't good enough and the manager told us that.

Poor First Half Performance

"We were poor in the first but great in the second. It could all change though... which we knew and we got that first goal which was vital."

He continued: "We must push on now. We've got to go up there and perform not like we did in the first half."

Dawson missed the League Cup final last year due to a hamstring injury.

"Last year was heartbreaking. But we are confident that we can go all the way again this year."

Manager Harry Redknapp offered a very honest analysis of his team's performance.

Honest Insight

"I was impressed with them [Burnley] tonight. They played five in midfield, passed the ball great, and at half time you couldn't predict the result we got.

"I had to sort them out at half time. We pressed and pressed and put them under pressure. In the ned it was a great result."

He added: "It was nice to get the early goal and that gave us - and the crowd - a decent lift.

"Listen, Burnley are well organised. They keep a good shape, and you can see why they have done so well," he concluded.
