Clemens Fritz to captain Werder Bremen again, confirms Schaaf
The 31-year-old right-back impressed in the role last season, and the coach took little time in deciding whether to retain him for the upcoming Bundesliga campaign
Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf has confirmed that Clemens Fritz will captain the side for the second consecutive season. The 51-year-old coach had promoted Fritz to the role for 2011-12 in the wake of Per Mertesacker's transfer to Arsenal and, following a convincing season on the right side of Werder's defence, the German international has been retained for the upcoming campaign.
"That was not a decision which took me too long to think through," Schaaf told the club's official website on the eve of Bremen's first training session in Norderney.
"Nothing is changing as far as this is concerned."
Fritz, 31, joined Werder in 2006 and cemented his starting spot the following year after an injury to Patrick Owomoyela. He has gone on to make 170 appearances for the club, including 33 as captain.
