Reports in the British press recently have speculated that Wigan Athletic midfielder Antonio Valencia could be the subject of a transfer bid from Spanish giants Real Madrid and European champions Manchester United.

It is claimed that Los Merengues' head coach, Juande Ramos, has identified the Ecuador international as the man to solve the club's right-wing problem.

Although it is reported that Los Blancos have made an offer to take Julian Faubert on loan from West Ham United for the remainder of the season, British tabloid The Daily Mirror alleges that they are still in the hunt for Valencia.

Apparently, the nine-time European Champions yesterday offered €10.2 million (£9m) to take the 23-year-old on loan for the next 18 months, after which time they will pay another €10.2m to sign him permanently should he impress.

However, The Mirror also claims that Manchester United are ready to pip Real to the former Villarreal starlet's signature, if manager Sir Alex Ferguson can convince the board to meet his €20.5m (£18m) valuation.

It is thought that while the 5ft 11in winger would jump at the chance to join a club as huge as Real Madrid, he is keen to remain in England.
