Newcastle United's resolve is set to be tested after mega-rich Manchester City made an offer for Shay Given, according to the British tabloid the Daily Mail.

Although the Irish international is believed to have told the Magpies that he is ready to leave the club, it has been reported that manager Joe Kinnear is determined to do all he can to keep hold of the goalkeeper.

However, with Toon Army owner Mike Ashley insisting that squad players be sold before any reinforcements are made, Newcastle may have to mull over the £8 million offer City have laid down.

It is claimed that Celtic's Polish international, Artur Boruc, and Given's compatriot Paddy Kenny, currently with Championship club Sheffield United, have both been lined up as potential replacements for the 33-year-old.

Furthermore, it is expected that the news may alert Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, as manager Harry Redknapp is thought to be keen to bring in either a replacement or competition for Brazilian goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.
